Test of 11 video cards for a retro system (27.02.2022)
Test system configuration:
Processor Intel Pentium 4, 2000 MHz;
Motherboard EliteGroup P4VMM2 ver7.3;
RAM 512 MB (256x2) at 266 MHz;
Hard drive Seagate 40 GB 7200.7
It all started with the fact that such a mother card fell into my hands:

It would seem unremarkable (with the exception of the luxurious color of the textolite), completely unsuitable for modern tasks,
the card is old, but not so old that I would classify it as "retro" hardware. There is really one "but" - a wonderful, universal connector that allows you to plug almost any AGP video card into
it, regardless of the generation! And then a thought appeared in my head: "why not test on it, those of my accelerators that were lying around in the cherished box?!!!". I installed a
processor, cooling, a couple of 256 MB RAM sticks, connected a 40 gig hard drive, and assembled a stand. I rolled up Windows 98 as an operating system, installed benchmarks, and it started ...
I did a lot of testing with 11 graphics cards in the 3DMark 2000 Pro and 3DMark 2001 SE synthetic benchmarks. I deliberately did not use the famous 3DMark 99 test, since many cards were
released in 99 or later, and the results of tests using the new graphics "features" of the turn of the millennium were much more interesting.
Also, when choosing video cards, one more condition was put forward - the presence of official drivers for the Windows 98 operating system and the absence of problems when working in the
MS-DOS environment. These conditions from my box of video cards were satisfied by the very 11 copies that I drove
The final results were surprising, but also provided food for thought and answers to some questions. For clarity, everything is summarized in the following graph (at the end
of the article, the exact numerical indicators, for your convenience, are given in tabular form):

The undisputed leader is the expected GeForce FX5700, which is not surprising, here we are dealing with the youngest and most powerful chip, moreover, the card is equipped with a
fabulous 256 MB of video memory by those standards. And a lot depends on the amount of memory in 3DMark tests, confirmation of which we will receive later.
The weakest variant is the built-in video chip of the motherboard - S3 Savage Pro DDR (but in our test it is so far as...). Conclusion - for the late games of the late 90's and early
00's, this option is not acceptable.

Among discrete cards, the 3Dfx Voodoo 3 3000 and NVidia Riva TNT2 Pro can be called conditional outsiders. In the case of 3Dfx, I can explain the low test results by the
insignificant amount of video memory (16MB is the smallest amount among the tested samples), and a lot depends on it, but TNT2 at the bottom of the list turned out to be deserved.
Although when assembling an authentic Retro PC, it is more than a worthy candidate for installation in the system. It should also be noted that these cards, in the games of
1998-2000, give an acceptable result in terms of such an indicator as "the number of frames per second".
Further, everything is simpler, almost a direct dependence of performance on the year of manufacture, except when it comes to models with the "Ti" index, they can still give
odds to younger (budget solutions), which we see on the graph between the 2nd and 4th generations and between 4th and generation "FX" from NVidia.
The result of the first Radeon model from ATI (model R6 or later marked as Radeon 7200) is very interesting, which in tests proved to be an analogue of the first graphics
accelerator from NVidia - GeForce256. Thus, if you want to install a GeForce256 in your system (which is very difficult to find now and often very expensive), then you can choose
a full-fledged alternative in the form of the ATI Radeon 7200 and enjoy the excellent quality of the original graphics of those years.

Also, from the test results, we see that, by and large, there is no big difference in FPS in games of those years when choosing a video card from 1999-2002, at least almost all
of them will give an acceptable result of 30 FPS and higher. So, take a look at the graph, choose a card with the performance that suits you, and use it with confidence!
It should be noted that I excluded the GeForce2 MX400, which I also had in stock, which I now very much regret. I mislabeled it because of its resemblance to the GeForce4 MX440.
But I took the stripped-down GeForce4 MX440 SE in order to show the difference with the original version, which (in the end) is not so great. I rank the GeForce4 MX440 and the Radeon
9000 series in the top spot in terms of price/performance/affordability.
And, of course, we shouldn't forget about the 3Dfx Voodoo 3 3000. In my opinion, this is the best card that can give us Glide, but it loses in performance to the later GeForce
and Radeon, and can only compete with cards of the TNT/TNT2 level, slightly ahead of them in synthetic tests. Of course, there is an option to use, for example, a GeForce FX5700,
and for Glide, use software emulation like NGlide, but I think that this is not an option. After all, many games of that time can be run on modern machines with the help of "crutches",
and we still assemble Retro PCs, wanting to feel the "warmth" of old hardware, and here we want to see a real Glide. That is why cards from 3Dfx stand apart, because everyone can do
OpenGL and Direct3D, and only a product from 3Dfx can give a real Glide.

Still, if the Glide mode is your favorite, and if you want it in the original, on 3Dfx lab. hardware, then this card is the right choice. Many talk about the advantages of 2 3Dfx
Voodoo 2 PCI cards in SLI mode, but there are a few "buts" that I will give as arguments "against":
1 - they will take you 2 PCI slots against one AGP (PCI) in the case of 3Dfx Voodoo 3 3000;
2 - even one 3Dfx Voodoo 2 PCI card is sometimes more expensive than the AGP version of 3Dfx Voodoo 3 3000, and two even more so;
3 - the maximum amount of memory in 3Dfx Voodoo 2 PCI is 12 MB, and in SLI mode this memory is not summed up, 3Dfx Voodoo 3 3000 has 16 MB of memory;
4 - trust my experience and look at the numerous reviews on YouTube, Voodoo 3 is ahead in many ways (according to test results).

After reading all this, you swore "dirty" and you had a desire to throw a pi$$ing slipper at me (russian expression)? ... I can understand that the defenders of the Voodoo 2 SLI are
the most orthodox retroclockers and you are not to be trifled with, my friends. So, I think this is the reason for a separate test dedicated exclusively to cards based on 3Dfx chips.
For myself, I chose two cards that I use: 3Dfx Voodoo 3 3000 and GeForce 2 Ti as a memory of those times when the grass was greener, and these "pieces of iron" were our unattainable
childhood dream.
